Development of Oriental Daycare Center Service Program for the Elderly in Korea



Abstract
This study was carried out to develop oriental daycare model for the old people to help weakened family support function, to provide more comfort life, to design service program such as medical service, physical therapy, excercise, recreation, and cultural activity for the elderly.
To develop daycare center model, this study was reviewed in literature concerned, and surveyed for the need of the center for the old people in what situations, further more, and analyzed the preference of them to find out what program is most suitable for them.
Study subjects were people over 60 who had visited oriental hospital or oriental clinic in Seoul, Tae Jeon, Iksan by survey. 250 sample were collected then 200 were analyzed. Data collecting period is three months from 5. June. 1999 to 30. Aug. 1999. Data were analyzed by frequency, chi-square, logistic regression analysis.
Main results follow
¥°. Average age is 70.1, education year is 5.5, literal rate is 81.0%, currnetly married is 61.0%, birth place mainly rural(82.5%), monthly income is 200,000won, most of study participants have their own home(84.5%).
¥±. Most of study participants want to use daycare center(71.5%), and want to more and more cheep with cost to use the center, and less than 500,000won for month in long-term visits, and they would like to use transportation provided by daycare center(53.0%). In medical service, they would like to get physical therapy, oriental physician treatment in order. Among exercise service, most of them wanted to hiking, thile they would not like to watching motive cultural and educational program.
¥². Willingness of daycare center use in gender was statistically significant with female prefer to male(p<0.05). In addition, there were more with less visits to oriental hospital, and more in capital city(p<0.01). In ADL, participants who answered more inconvenient would like to use daycare center(p<0.05).
¥³. In a regression pattern, significant variables are preparing bed, bathing and sex. This study was developed the model of oriental daycare center utilizing above results so that may delivery an opportunities to improve health and quality of life to the old, to lessen physical, psychological, socialogical loads of supporting family, and to intensify family supporting capacities by reducing institute dependent.
